On another thread someone mentioned Chris Montez. I immediately remembered "Call Me" and found a clip of him performing it on YouTube.

The song was always a favorite from 1966. The melody is so vibrant, perhaps a bit bubblegum in style, but it's got that "feel good" type of vibe and reminds me of my youth during the 60's.

Another example of what made "Top 40" radio so much fun in the 60's. Acording to the comments on the video posted below, there are plans for a movie on Chris Montez's life. It would be an interesting thing to see. As to the video, you better put on your dancing shoes.....

I liked his version of Call Me better than Lets Dance. Its a shame he and Ritchie Valens dont get more credit to expose the Latino community in music they really opened the door along with Tito Puente and people of that ilk for the US

Our band (The Hurricanes/Fascinators)backed up a rock show at Toledo Sports arena in 1962. Dick Clark was the M.C. ---On the show were Chris Montez,Franki Valle & the Four Seasons,Bobby Vee,Gene Pitney,Clyde McFadder and others.
When the show was over we were in Dick Clark's dressing room with Chris Montez when we found out that the promoter had skipped town with all our wages.(He stayed around during the show long enough to collect them though) Chris Montez was counting on the money to get back home to California. He didn't have enough for a plane ticket. Myself,Gene Pitney and some of the other musicians gave him enough to get back home.

They never did find the promoter. Chris was a very nice guy, down to earth, and very friendly.

I'm glad to see that No Place started this thread regarding Chris Montez. Along with Ritchie Valens, Herb Alpert & the early work of Freddy Fender, Chris helped break down the doors for Mexican-Americans in the rock & pop music biz during the early 1960s.

"Call Me" is one of my favorite A&M singles from the 1960s along with Sergio Mendes' "Mas Que Nada" and Herb's "A Taste Of Honey". It's "live-at-the-club" vibe made the tune popular.

After the first verse of "Call Me", you can hear, what sounds like Herb Albert in the background yelling, "yeah Chris". Thats cool.

Angel:
It was Herb in the background. The disc was recorded & mixed to sound like the Johnny Rivers live tunes that were popular at the time.

"Call Me" is a great record and kind of hard to find on CD. There is a Chris Montez retrospective of his A&M recordings available as an import. However, Call Me rarely gets anthologized here in the states.

The background singers sounded like they were a little tipsy on martinis...but that's what made the record fun.

Like Grape, I wasn't too crazy about Let's Dance, but most of the stuff Chris Montez did for A&M is cool.

Don't they call it lounge music these days?
