One of my favorite Good Guys at WVON years ago...I heard about him passing away earlier today on WHPK. Services are on 2-28 at AR Leak. I have no other info. |

very sad news indeed! I have several taped airchecks of him on WYNR/Chicago from the summer of 64, days before the station switched formats, and he was hilarious!! (probably because he knew he was gonna be looking for work anyway in a few days...) Another essential part of Chicago soul history lost! RIP Butterball! (and I might add that he was the "real" Butterball!!..the guy in Philly on WDAS came later...) |

This is great news! Butterball lives! So much bad news these days. I loved Butterball in Philly too. He was fantastic when I used to listen. Then there is our Butterball Jr. in Detroit. |

I DO apologize. I am very sorry that I posted incorrect information, and unfortunately I assumed that the source was correct. I did not intend to start any rumors. I am happy to hear that Butterball is indeed alive. If a formal retraction is needed, then please advise. Cat |

Same here!!!! Was he sick / hospitalized???? I guess what I'm asking is if there is a contact address to send well wishes and just a "thanks for still being alive and in the present tense" kind of thing.....man, I'm relieved!!! I wish I had more of his airchecks!! He was a riot on the air, his delivery and ad libbing over the records...total opposite of Herb Kent who was way more subdued and cool sounding..never talked over the songs,etc....kinda like the past and the present as far as air personalities went... |

Thanks so much!!! I love that stuff, and the tunes being played are excellent! This tape I have is from the last week of August, 64 (labor day weekend promos)and ALL the guys on that day (except Floyd Brown)sounded like they were half in the bag!I think they all knew the station was on its way out.. The guy doing afternoons(before butterball) "big Jim Randolph" is hilarious! Anything you can find would be appreciated....I'd gladly pay you for a copy of whatever you have! Thanks again...and let me say I heard your Versalettes interview a few months back and thought it was great! |

It's good to know that Bill "Butterball" Crane from the 'VON days,is still alive. The DJ in Philly that goes by the nickname "Butterball",is not the same person. |

Yep! That's my (other) Butterball! LOL! I listen to him, Harvey Holiday, Hy-Lit, Jerry Blaveats, Mary Mason, oh and host of other excellent Philly and South Jersey DJ's when I lived there too. They all reminded me of the great ones I was missing back in Detroit,Toledo and Canada. |
