Bobby Massey quit the group (he was tired of touring) around 1970 and took up producing.
He was the Cleveland contact for All Platinum & helped set up the Astroscope / Horoscope labels.
He also had a big hand in some Cleveland labels and groups (Truth I seem to recall being one of these).
Later he went to jail but is now out & living in the south.

Just checked and Bobby Massey did work with the group Truth.
He cut them for the Sounds of Cleveland and Devaki labels.
At one time the group toured with Dennis Edwards (after he had quit the Temptations for the 1st time). They recorded with him but when he returned to the Temptations his lead vocals were removed from the track "I'm Coming Home", a new lead was added and the track was released.
Truth also went down to Philly to record & a 12" single was released on (Nickel Shoe) Philly Groove Records (in 1981) by them. This featured “I Want To Thank You Girl” and “Prayer For Humanity”.
Truth's (& ex Imperial Wonders member) Al Boyd landed a song writers contract with Motown (in the 80's I seem to recall).

Bill Isles was the first to leave in 1965. Bobby Massey decided to go into production, feeling that the brothers just weren't making enough money. Especially after Chess went under, taking Neptune Records with them. Bobby produced songs for S.O.U.L. & The Imperial Wonders (Who recorded as The New Young Hearts of'The Young Hearts Get Lonely Too' fame).

Bobby also produced songs for True Movement & The Four Wonders & when the group cooled off, morphed The Imperial Wonders into a group named Truth & produced them. Bobby also produced The Ponderosa Twins + 1 during their hit streak.

Walter Powell became ill & was replaced by Sammy Strain in 1977 Walter passed away in 1977. When Sammy left in 1993 & went back with Little Anthony & The Imperials, Nate Best entered the group. He stayed until 1997, whereupon he was replaced by Eric Grant.

You are correct, that was a slip from typing too fast. Of course Walter is Williams.

Thanks for the correction :-)

How come when Bill Powell passed away there was no fanfare about it or no mention back in the day? The OJays were on the top of their game then and I thought it would have gotten more press

Stephanie, there was coverage of his illness with cancer in Jet Magazine in 1975 and his subsequent death later. It was only mentioned (his illness)in the general market papers after he passed.

The Temptations "I'm Coming Home" was based on Truth's song (first recorded with Dennis Edwards on lead vocals but released with new vocals substituted).
I think the fact that Motown hired Al Boyd (of Truth) as a song writer around that time speaks volumes as to the origins of the song.
...... MORE INFO FROM MY NOTES ...
The only track that any members of TRUTH recorded with Dennis Edwards was background for "I'M COMING HOME". That background was laid down by Al, Russell and Larry (Hancock) at Cleveland Recording Studio. After hearing the 'released' version of the song by TRUTH, it appears to have female background vocals. Bobby Massey may have removed Dennis' vocal and Al, Russell and Larry's background and just kept the 'revised' track for TRUTH's LP. However there is a live recording of TRUTH and Dennis Edwards live at The Cadillac Club in St. Louis, Missouri from 1981.
BTW, Truth's version of the song is credited to Al Boyd, Dennis Edwards & Bobby Massey (the group's producer / manager).

Lawyers were retained by Bobby Massey and the O'Jays to intercede on Truth's behalf with regard to the Temptations song. However, even though Al Boyd signed a deposition for an attorney, he still hasn't received any money from Motown as a settlement.... but then he was under the impression that because he was on salary at Jobete, he would get his dues via that route.
He still doesn't think he was ever properly paid re: that song.
