I happened into the local Karokie bar and just as I walked in, a friend named Kathleen just started singing "If I Were Your Woman"...and damn...she did a real nice job (a small crack near the end...and there's only ONE Gladys), but she DID it. She usually does that Laura Branagan type stuff, and I've done a couple Marvin & Tammi duets with her, but she got all into the tune. When I was talking with her later, I mentioned that my man from S.D...Clay McMurray WROTE that tune...she asked me to say a sincere thanks...so for Kathleen...THANKS!!!... STUBASS |

Thanks Stu....I really appreciate You and the folk that still remember my music. It's nice to hear that your friend enjoyed singing "If I Were Your Woman". Tell her I said THANK YOU... Cheers, Clay |

Bettye has a version on her 1982 Motown LP, Tell Me A Lie, which was re-issued on CD this past year by Reel Music. |

Out of the thousands.....It is easily one of my top 10 Motown pieces....A masterpiece from the first note to the last....and the bass is killer. |

Gladys really did "from a whisper to a scream" on that song. I FELT the rejected lover desperation...("... but she treats you like ice...") Still gives me the chills. |

God, I still love "Make me the Woman You Go Home To" - it's always been a warm, soul soap opera episode to me. Especially love the 45 version with swampy echo guitar.... |

Both albums "If I Were Your Woman" and "Standing Ovation" are two of the group's best - and contains some of Clay's finest work(s). Kevin Goins - KevGo |
