They were the same group, a mixed group: two girls and one guy. But I think some people have gotten the facts right. I think I read the guy was the lead singer, but that can't be right. I think the lead was female with a husky voice. On "You Are the Circus," during the fade, I think I heard the lead sing: "I'm through with your circus, now boy." If that was a male singing, this is one that slipped by the radio programmers. |

The group had a female lead singer. As the Sandpebbles, they had a pop/soul hit with "Love Power" in 1967 - the same song Luther Vandross used in his "Power Of Love/Love Power" hit medley in 1991. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

I always thought the lead on "Love Power" was a male. Is that not so? |

I did too! It certainly sounds like a guy with a high voice. Best, Mark |

It's long time since I've played "Love Power", however it would appear to be a lady by the name of Lonzine Wright lead with Andrea Bolden & Calvin White being the other members. |

Kev and Soul are right, the lead singer was a woman with a big hard gospel bred voice. I've always liked this group though I never knew a lot about them. Felix on wbgo plays several of their songs including their version of Never My Love which I like a lot because it adds gusto to what most singers only treated as a tender torch song (Marilyn McCoo, ie...) This was their biggest hit on the soul charts when I was coming up.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =RIAwW08FuLw&feature=related |

Thanks everyone. I thought the lead singer was female. I think the writer of the liner notes to a Sandpebbles CD got his information wrong. He said Calvin White was the group's lead singer. That CD also left out "You are the Circus" and the group's other Cotillion singles. |

I liked "Love Power" for the vocals, however, it always sounded liked an unfinished track to me.Something about the drums and the rythmn in general. |

Thanks, Mr. Soul! I forgot which woman sang the lead and I checked my Sandpebbles collection - it was Lonzine (and she had some BIG pipes!) Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Swamp Dogg (Jerry Williams) produced C & the Shells on their Cotillion tracks. I'll ask him what he can remember about them. |

I always thought the lead singer of the Sandpebbles, and then C and the Shells, was Calvin White. She had a solo album sometime in the early 80s I recall where she was called C M Lord. |

I have a CM Lord album -- a track off it was a top UK MS club play back in the day -- but I can't currently remember its title. She had solo releases on Montage, Capitol & RCA, so must have had a decent solo career. |

This is the album that I have (on vinyl) -- it appears it has been re-issued on CD 'due to demand'. The popular track in the UK was "I'm So Happy That Love Has Found You". |

Mike and JSmith, you guys are confusing me. Who is CM Lord and what does she have to do with the Sandpebbles/C and the Shells? Calvin White is/or was a male. (Message edited by kamasu on December 10, 2008) |

..........Got a short reply from Swamp........ Lonzine did ninety five percent of the lead vocals. I wish I knew her whereabouts, I'd record her again. If you send me some specific questions I can respond to you better. So if anyone has pressing C & the Shells related questions (mainly in connection with their work for Cotillion), let me know & I will pass them along to Swamp. |

Kamasu...I must be the one who is confused!! I remember buying the CM Lord album Flashback back in the day because I read somewhere that she was formerly with The Sandpebbles. I recall being disappointed with the album and in fact don't still have it. So maybe Ms Lord has nothing to do at all with the group...and I accept Calvin White is/was a male!! |
