The Chi-Lites tune, "Oh Girl" one of the best ever, a true classic. I love it, I recently heard it on my internet radio, I probably here it once a week either on my internet, from my CD collection, or on the car radio.

OK, what is that instrument that works so well with the tune? It is not a harmonica, though it kind of sounds like one.

This has been bugging me for a long time. What is it?!!

Same instrument used by Augustus Pablo for a lot of his classic reggae dub........It always seems to have a very haunting, forelorn kind of sound.....both in the Chi-Lites tune and in Pablo's hypnotic dub reggae.

Marshall plays it now in their shows, I had never seen Eugene play it.

Whenever I see this question I always think about the toy piano used in the Tempts "Its Growing"

I asked Marshall and Eugene this same question over ten years ago and their arranger Thomas Washington (Tom Tom 84) confirms this.

The lead part was a harmonica, with the melodica playing a secondary line in the background.

Marshall played both on the record. Eugene played guitar and bass, Quinton Joseph on drums.

Here they are on the Flip Wilson Show -

Note they are lip-synching to the rhythm track. As I mentioned in a prior thread regarding Oh Girl, it was a demo that all concerned (Brunswick VP Carl Davis, Marshall, Tom-Tom) thought it had hit potential except for Eugene. Flip Wilson heard the track and told the group to perform it on the show.

The day after the broadcast, stores were ordering the song and radio demanded the single. Therefore, Eugene went back into the studio to overdub Floyd Morris' piano part and Tom's string arrangement.

Within four weeks, it was #1 on the pop and soul charts.

BTW - Marshall switched to the melodica as of their late 1972 appearance on the Midnight Special and continues to use that instrument on live gigs.
