Just received an e-mail about this...

Carolyn "Carol" Johnson -- Original Member of The Exciters
(1945 - 2007) died appr. May 7, from cancer.

I am sad to announce the death of Carolyn "Carol" Johnson,
original member of The Exciters, whose big hit rendition
of "Tell Him" rocketed to the top of the charts in late
1962. Carol, along with other members Lillian Walker, Sylvia
Wilbur and lead singer Brenda Reid formed the group in 1961,
first billed as The Masterettes. Neighborhood friend Herb
Rooney suggested that they become the sister group to his
group, The Masters. Eventually the quartet became a trio of
young ladies with Rooney as the piano player and the fourth
voice, changing their name in the process. Although they
never again charted high on the pop charts, they recorded an
amazing array of R&B classics such as a version of Bert
Berns' "Little Bit Of Soap", Ellie Greenwich's "He's Got The
Power" and the original version of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy",
recorded a year earlier than Manfred Mann's hit version.

Condolences to the friends and family of Carol Johnson. And to think we were just talking about the Exciters about two weeks ago... May she rest in peace.

"Tell Him" was a defining moment in pop music. Great hook and melody. To think it was the song that inspired a young Dusty Springfield to change her musical direction from folk (with the Springfields) to the pop/R&B genre that defined her career.

Carol's membership in the Exciters played a great role in pop music. May she forever rest in eternity.
