Watching all of these old episodes has me wondering what many of them are up to today, are they still alive, etc. I don't know all of their names but I'm gonna throw out a few descriptions, LOL. The Asian lady, I believe her name is Cheryl Song The light-skinned dude who danced with her sometimes - he used to work the hell out of a dance with his shoulders, curl and all flying, LOL (this past week he had on a black cowboy shirt) The dude who just walked back and forth on the stage Damita Jo Freeman Lil Joe (I think that's his name, dark skinned guy with a fro, seemed to be pretty well known on the show) The one who wore the masks every week Fill in any blanks with any others you all may know of now, I'm just curious! |

The only one I'm familiar with is "Asian Lady." I remember her face. Therefore, she shall henceforth be called "Asian Lady." |

Oh my goodness, that's unfortunate! The only reason I know that guy's name is because I was watching the Jacksons on there on YouTube, and he asked one of them a question. That's really sad. I didn't realize a lot of them were gone. |

Yes, the Asian girl's name is Cheryl Song, Lil Joe Chism passed away about 10 years ago. The guy who danced across stage(posing...LOL) is Louie "Ski" Carr. Tyrone Proctor is still around as is , Pat Davis and others. |

Rosie Perez was a Soul Train dancer. She's now an actress, had a best supporting actress academy award nomination for the film Fearless. |

Damita Jo was also an American Bandstand dancer. She won the AB dance contest one year which resulted in doing choreography for different acts, including, I believe, the Spinners. How sad that so many of the guys are no longer with us? What brought an early end to their lives? The streets? drugs? gangs? Really sad to hear! PS--I was a dancer on American Bandstand in the 70s! Actually, the late 70s in the disco era. |

Randy, the big disease with the little name claimed a lot of the male ST dancers circa 1973-1984. |

Damn ... that's so sad and scary. I always hate to hear that. But, look at it this way - at least we get to see them shine in these reruns. I liked that fact that as flamboyant as some of them were, they were being themselves, which you don't see much today. As for Cheryl Song, she was also in "Beat It," in the beginning in the pool hall, LOL. I guess she was a video girl before they called it that. |

Rosie was a dancer on Soul Train...I remember the clip in question. Jermaine Stewart was a dancer on Soul Train too (WE DON'T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF)...he passed from AIDS complications too. |

What you are thinking about is that Rosie was the choreographer for "In Living Color" and The Fly Girls- but she wasn't a Fly Girl herself. In fact, one of the Fly Girls is now a judge on Dancing with the Stars. The one named Carryann. Jermaine Stewart will be gone 10 years this year. I know he and Jody Watley were best buddies. I actually saw Jermaine go down the line in one of the episodes that aired recently. I enjoyed his performance on there too as an artist. |

Damita Jo was in "Private Benjamin" (the movie) and has appeared in other film and television projects as well as worked as a choreographer. She suffered a loss in her family not so long ago, and has been traveling between California and Texas handling family matters. There is a SoulTrainFans Yahoo Group moderated by a former ST dancer where you can find all the info you need regarding past dancers and everything else. |

Last month when Blue Magic, Sister Sledge, Major Harris were on during the Soul Train line segment when Teddy Pendergrass was singing "Bad Luck" and people were dancing there was a girl who danced down the line twice and she was the best. She was pretty, light brown-skinned, had on black overalls and a red blouse under it, and had flower in her head. What was her name? Was she a dancer or on that show once? Was everyone on the show a soul train dancer or was most just visiting for a show to dance? Because all could surely dance. I couldn't tell the regulars from the visitors. |

SoulDooWopRnBlady, that sounds like it was Pat Davis. She was a regular dancer on the show and she often dressed as you described it. Pat was also one of the better dancers on the classic Soul Train. |

Some of the Soul Train dancers got the chance to work with entertainers like Roberta Flack and Diana Ross. They toured a little bit as a professional dance troupe before Don Corneilius kicked them off the show. (Message edited by motown_fan on February 24, 2007) |

Moonbeam, as I recall it, some of the dancers complained to Right On magazine about the long tapings of shows on weekends, the fact they were often fed fried chicken snacks from KFC and that some of them believed they should have been paid for being on the show. Some of the ST dancers believed they were just as popular as the guests ( which was true in some cases). There was also some competitive thing between Dick Clark's and Don Cornelius' production people that involved Clark luring some dancers over to Bandstand where they were allegedly paid. I'm sure someone else remembers reading about this. |

Gary - Thanks for the link. That was the best 6 minutes and 3 seconds I spent in a long time. I am still grinning from ear to ear. A great James Brown tune! Big Hair! Great dancing! And Don Cornelius going down the soul train line TWICE with the 70s Supremes. How cool was that. Don please get it together and release these classics on DVD! And to anyone else wanting to see this I suggest you hurry. The last time there were Soul Train clips on You Tube they were swiftly removed by the Don Cornelius camp. Cheers. |

Moonbeam: There is money to be made...but the gamble is will it be enough made once he has paid all the necessary clearances. That's why DCP's legal team is all over YouTube clips...they don't want the use of ST clips to come back and bite them in the ass. |

Normal people, wierd people, talented, young and restless, gay and straight, wild and youthful, whatever you want to call it. But to say alot of them died from the "big disease", I don't know about that one. I danced on several shows, went as a guest of a semi-regular. Had big dreams about being a singer-songwriter; loved to dance, the music and the party. Can't remember the guests because the tapings were always in segments. It was like a big party, usually crowded, waiting to get in and have a chance to do your thing. I partied with Jeffrey and others at the Mavericks Flat in LA. Still doin' my thing on the dancefloor; (ouch my hip) well up until a couple of years ago, still singing and writing (some regional and national exposure). I would say most of those young people just loved to dance. And I would bet alot of them are still kickin' just like me. Damn..I'm only a tail-end baby-boomer. And I'm still look good too! Having |
