What was up with Diana? She seemed not able to remember all of the the words to Lovely Day. I've noticed she does this a lot lately...forgets lyrics to songs she should know. Maybe it's nerves, maybe it was something else. I noticed for the second and third songs that she performed, they used the recording and she lip synched. She was much better. But during Lovely Day, I thought she was having a Forest whitaker moment. (Message edited by motown_fan on January 16, 2007) |

Join the Conversation at 'GMA' Jan. 16, 2007 — First with the Supremes and then as a solo artist, Diana Ross is one of those rare entertainers who has shaped American pop culture. With her string of No. 1 hits, confidence and cutting-edge fashion sense, Diana Ross and the Supremes became the biggest and most successful American female group of the 1960s. Ross then stepped into the limelight on her own with a string of smash solo hits, not to mention her triumphs on the silver screen. With her searing portrayal of Billie Holiday in "Lady Sings the Blues," Ross garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. 'Excited' for 'Dreamgirls' Cast Now Ross is back in the headlines, though indirectly, thanks to the hit movie "Dreamgirls," which has been called a thinly veiled history of the Supremes. One of the film's stars, Beyonce, acknowledged she had a shrine to Ross in her trailer, and watched her movies to prepare for the role. Ross said to ABC News' Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America" that she has not seen the movie yet. "Maybe I should go see it with my lawyer," she joked. Ross has refused to comment on the movie, but today she said she was "happy" for the cast. "I've only heard what everybody else says, that it's very much my image and likeness," she said. "So if I've had an opportunity to influence any of these beautiful, talented young people, then I'm excited about it." Secrets to Longevity in Show Business "I Love You," Ross's first studio album in seven years, comes out today. The album is a collection of classic love songs, including "Lovely Day," "More Today Than Yesterday" and "The Look of Love." Pointing out that many of her songs have been about love, Ross said, "I think now, especially now, it's time to say, 'I love you.'" The 62-year-old also joked about being "the aging diva," saying that some of her makeup tricks have changed over the years. Judging from the audience reaction during her "Good Morning America" concert, the singer's star power hasn't dimmed a bit. |

Pag2 of the above: Looking back on her career, Ross said she was thankful for the mentors she had who helped her along the way. She said young artists should look beyond image-making and focus on longevity. "Well, I just think it's really important that this industry, and especially for the females, but all of us — it's show business," Ross said. "There's a business here, and it's not just about the image. It's about what goes on inside of you. It's the interior as well as the exterior." «PREVIOUS 1. 2. |

Well, I think she dispelled those rumors that she had been paid by producers of Dreamgirls. She said something about possibly seeing the film with her lawyers.

Motown fan -- what do you mean by saying that Diana forgets words a lot lately. Where have you seen her do this a lot of late?. I thought this one one of her first performances in a while. It appeared to me that she just came in a bar too late, but made up for it like a pro by skipping a bar later. |

Every time she's been on tv lately. She's always done it, fumbled over words to songs she oughta know. She's been better. (Message edited by motown_fan on January 16, 2007) |

During RTL, she had to have Teleprompters positioned in front of her because she couldn't remember all the lyrics. That is a fact. |

I can't remember all those 60's lyrics, and I've been listening to them for over 40 years. Not only am I not surprised, but @ her age of 62, it makes little difference. |

It's not slamming. But damn, she's been entertaining for over 40 years and she still stumbles over song lyrics she oughta know. I've never seen Gladys knight, Nancy Wilson or Dionne Warwick forget lyrics. Maybe she could have used a teleprompter this morning. If you're not going to give it a 110 percent, then quit, retire gracefully, in my opinion. I just don't think she cares any longer. (Message edited by motown_fan on January 16, 2007) |

She "got lost" on the start of the verses on "Lovely Day" and I would almost swear she was lipsyncing the next two songs "The Look of Love" and "More Today Than Yesterday." I saw a couple of instances on TLOL & MTTY where she pulled the microphone away, but it sounded like her voice should have been right up against it (the microphone). The backing tracks were all definitely pre-recorded - the same ones as on the new album. The band in the studio may have been playing along with the backing tracks or just faking it, although the drummer was hitting something. She did look great and was very charming. I haven't watched the Live w/ Regis & Kelly yet. |

I have to agree with Motown fan here...I've seen Heart, Four Tops (1988), Mary Wilson, Martha, Monkees, Three Dog Night, Turtles, Pointer Sisters, Elton John, Moody Blues, Cheap Trick, Grass Roots, Gary Puckett... NONE of them forgot the words to their songs. In this case, she just came in too soon. But she did look good. |

Aren't these songs from a new album as opposed to stuff she's been doing for years? When she performs these songs more often, I am sure she'll become more comfortable with them. |

Well I don't know Charise...and certainly no offense intended to Diana Ross, who needs not my approval for her to maintain her legacy...and although I have not seen any of these appearances...If she is blowing lyrics, not in sync with the musicians, then she needs to woodshed a bit and work on her performance (Sammy never appeared on stage in an unprofessional manner...neither did Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong, Ella or Sarah as they aged...and when Sinatra started becoming forgetful on stage, and Dean Martin started "calling in" his performances, they were both advised to hang it up...which for the most part...they did, and Elvis became a caracature and somewhat of a "joke" as his life was falling apart, and he was blowing lyrics during performances!!!... As a professional, she needs to have her stuff together, or just do interviews and not perform if she's not getting it right for any reason...but even a legend like Ms Ross and a professional of her stature gets no free pass for those types of amateur mess ups. If she's not up to performing...then she shouldn't perform, although as I said, I haven't seen any of the appearances in question here!!!...I have noted, as I did on another thread, that Diana Ross appears to be "coming out" more in public and in the media!!!...Perhaps there is something in the works which will allow her to take advantage of all this "Dreamgirls" hype!!!... Supreme3, yes, I saw them all... the Moody Blues 3 times! And oh.. I forgot, I saw Bette Midler didn't forget her words, either. If was something that happened rarely, it would be one thing... but it's a usual occurence with her. I know people like her, and want to make excuses for her. The performance this morning was not that bad, but the days when she would give a flawless performance seem to be over. the name Diana Ross once meant the best in showmanship, now it just means "so-so". She said this morning she didn't listen to music much, mainly self help and spiritual growth tapes (If your spirit ain't grown by 62, it's time to give it up!). She just needs to listen to her own damn records! Just buckle down, and get it right. Part of the problem is her fans are so adoring, and willing to make excuses for lackluster performances, that she has become complacent. She knows that all she has to do is go out in something sparkly, open her arms out.. and she can do no wrong. And her fans treating her like her turds smell like roses has just simply caused her to get sloppy. It's fine to love your diva, just let her know when she's not up to par, or you do her no favors. |

If only the "real world" were as kind as you Stoned Love...Unfortunatly...they're not!!!...You see...people who make tens of millions of dollars from their profession, are held up to a slightly different standard than folks working for 20 bucks an hour!!!...A 20 million dollar wide receiver drops a pass in the end zone and costs his team the game gets skewered!!!...Major stars in the entertainment industry aren't living in 10 million dollar homes in Beverly Hills for "having a bad day"!!!...and from the sound of it...this is more than a one time thing (if it is a one time thing...than perhaps it's forgivable)!!!...If Diana Ross is trying to "call it in"...then she should NOT be performing live and tainting her legacy...particularly in lieu of her recent problems as relates to alcohol...people are going to start adding up two and two!!!...She owes it...not to me or you...but to HERSELF to be fully prepared and rehearsed for whatever appearances she accepts...If she's not, then it is a legitimate cause for concern!!!...I have NO doubt that Mr Gordy would agree with me FULLY!!!... Well this is the first time since some "VH1 Diva" special was on a few years ago that I know of Diana being on USA TV. If she has been on in the last 5 years or so I sure have missed it, but I find that hard to believe. I think I have seen everyone of her TV performances since the first Ed Sullivan show as a little girl! You see I'm from the generation that grew up running to the TV whenever a Negro was on because it was such a novelty! Youngsters may not understand it but if you are from that era you do. Old habits die hard and whenever the Black celebrities of that era are going to be on TV I go out of my way to watch. So I would be interested to know of these tv performances of her stumbling that I missed out on. Ironically, it was Maria Carey that fumbled the lyrics to a Supreme song on the "Diva Special" and Diana covered for her! And thats the last time I have seen her on tv performing. Also, I have seen other artists stumble over or forget lyrics in Tv performances over the years even when they were younger than 62. Gladys Knight ,Frank Sinatra and Dionne Warwick come to mind: It may be them changing up the words out of boredom with the repetition or they may have actually forgot the original lyrics, but either way it is quite normal and not worth attacking someone for. I still say she did not forget the lyric, but came in on the wrong beat and had to skip a beat to play catch up in the track. But if she did so what? Anyway, she looked good, sounded good singing and spoke spoke a good interview with Sawyer, R&K and Letterman. I wish her the best and will pick up the new CD next payday. Cheers PS. Right on for the 'spell checker' (Message edited by sdl on January 17, 2007) |

I would just chalk it up to being so early in the morning to be performing. I think Diana did a fine job, all things considered. It was just great to see her on TV again. I hope her new CD does well here in the states. She deserves it. Diane Sawyer asked Diana if she was going to be on American Idol this season, and that appears to be true. She said she wouldn't be "coaching" the kids, but I guess her presence would indicate a theme week, perhaps Motown or love songs (given the new CD, it'd be a nice plug). |

Good Diana's gonna be on American Idol. But Stubass said it perfectly. For Diana Ross to stand there and give a performance like she did, not be prepared made her look like some aspiring contestant on Idol. She gets no pass. The great ones never faltered and when they did, they stopped. I saw Ray Charles forget a lyric only once in my lifetime, he died that same year. Maybe it's time she do something else. |

Her voice is as good as it ever was. She looks as good as she ever did. She still manages hit singles here in Europe. She loves an audience and performing. This woman will go the same way as James Brown. She will pass away with concert bookings still in her diary - NOT sitting by the fireside growing facial hair and dribbling. Of that I'm sure! |

I love Diana Ross. I watched her on GMA, LWR&K, and last night on the David Letterman Show. I have to say that she did not appear to be 100% committed to these appearances. I felt we were getting "Diana Ross on a shoestring." Yes, she was lovely and charming in conversation, and I did see glimpses of the magic she has in her performances, but this was not Diana at her most committed. I don't feel she was adequately prepared and rehearsed to perform for these TV appearances. And, after reviewing the GMA performances again, I am convinced she was lipsyncing the second and third songs after her misstep on "Lovely Day." She did announce doing an episode of American Idol and touring in March & April. I would still go see her anyway. |
