Tom Moulton mentioned in another thread that today is the 90th birthday of the venerable (and venerated) producer Jerry Wexler. (For some reason, I thought Jerry's birthdate was the 17th, but never mind!) I can only echo Tom's wish that Jerry has a lot more birthdays ahead of him. Thank you Jerry - your productions on Ray, Aretha, Ruth Brown, Joe Turner, The Drifters, Clyde McPhatter, Chuck Willis, LaVern Baker, Solomon Burke, Esther Phillips, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield and others have formed a good part of the soundtrack to my life.

Happy 90th to the man who helped coin the term Rhythm & Blues when he was a columnist at Billboard Magazine 60 years ago. His stewardship as the late Ahmet Ertegun's partner at Atlantic bore a bounty of talent that is unparalleled.

I was an acquaintance of his son and had spoken to Mr. Wexler himself on the phone when I worked in NYC many years ago. An absolute gentleman with an extremely keen mind.

Happy birthday, Mr. Wexler. May you have many more.

If there's a high priest of the music, Mr Wexler is it. His knowledge is encyclopedic, his credentials second to none and, as Kev says, he is a true gentleman.

Many happy returns and thanks for being there.

One of the major heroes of American music. I recommend his biography, "Rhythm and the Blues" to anyone who hasn't already read it.

Happy 90th Jerry!!

Hi all,

Bumping this back up! It took a few days, but my birthday tribute to Jerry is now up on my live365.com station, at the link below. 12 hours of great music, and no annoying announcer - the music speaks for itself!

Happy Birthday Jerry! I remember when I did some sessions in Miami for Jerry. I brought Jack Ashford, Eddie Willis and Ray Monette down there with me. We recorded with Jackie Moore. Jerry let us use his big boat one day and told the captain make sure these guys catch some fish and we did. Later, Jerry offered me a job as staff guitarist for Atlantic in Miami. He offered me a salary and told me as long as I was available for Atlantic sessions, I could play for anybody else in my free time. It was a good offer but I had to say no. Jerry is a great man who did a lot for the music business.

Dennis,
I'm interested to know why you declined the offer. Too busy at the time, which I can understand?

Happy Birthday Mr. Wexler....and Thanks again to you and Henry Allen for giving me a fantastic job in the promotion department at Atlantic in the 60's when it was a Fun business. I'll never forget going to your home in Florida for Brunch along with Henry Allen,Johnny Nash and the original Florida DJ Butterball in 1967
It was quite an experience seeing that the only way to get to your home was by BOAT....LOL

God Bless
Clay McMurray
