Anyone here familar with this 70's r&b/funk artist (especially his *way* funky musicians)? My cover band has just added one of his songs to our list (no, not the 'Freaky' one...too sexual; we're doing 'Tenderoni').

I like his production on Carl Carlton's debut album.

Leon is a very interesting artist that you just don't hear much about..yet he is a first-rate musician, singer, writer and producer.
He always seemed to come up with really catchy songs and lyrics...I believe he is still musically active through his EveJim operation in California.

Leon Haywood had more hits than he's given credit for. He could write and cut hits in the styles of whoever was hot at the time.
"It's Got to Be Mellow," sounded like Motown and Marvin Gaye.
One forgotten Leon Haywood tune is "A Family Affair (Keep it in the Family)." it had a Staples Singers kind of feel to it.

Leon also did a helluva job on "Make Me Yours". No disrespect to Betty Swann, but Leon's version is smokin'.

I did a search and found a couple of Leon Haywood discs on EveJim Records that feature some of his best known hit songs.

Are these re-recordings or the originals?

Leon Haywood is all of those things...+ a smart businessman to boot. Though he still writes & produces...he could easily kick back from the royalties received from the many times his work has been sampled. (He is, reportedly, working on a new project though.)

That Out to Catch single has such a groove....
the photo on Daydream was also used on the back album cover for Naturally on 20th Fox in 1980, lead track was Don't Push It.
Consider the Source is one of his ballads on the Come and Get Yourself Some (75).

My favorite Leon LP is The Mellow, Mellow Leon Haywood on Galaxy. Quite hard to find, but worth the search.
